Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory (CoLAB)

The Research-Creation and Social Justice CoLABoratory (CoLAB) is a leading research-creation center at the University of Alberta. Housed in the Department of Art and Design, it brings together scholars (artists and academics) from 5 university faculties and 12 departments, with the aim of (1) nurturing a generative interdisciplinary research-creation culture for faculty and students on campus, and (2) investigating the role of research-creation methods in social and ecological justice projects.

Intermedia Research Studio

The Intermedia Research Studio, housed in at the Department of Sociology, undertakes collaborative research that seeks to decolonize the social sciences through a theory and praxis of intermedia commons; advance a critical global sociology for a post-Gutenberg world; research-create probes that sense social contradictions and create sympoietic intermedia commons for degrowth and regeneration; prefigure and regenerate scholarly commons beyond the neoliberal crisis university.

Arts-Based Research Studio (ABRS)

The Arts-based Research Studio is a Canada Foundation for Innovation funded facility housed in the Faculty of Education – a studio space and equipment dedicated to facilitating and promoting arts-based research. The Studio maintains an international network of arts-based researchers, regularly organizes speakers series and artist residencies, and manages the open access journal Art/Research International: A Transdisciplinary Journal.

EARS (ElectroAcoustic Research Studio)

The EARS (ElectroAcoustic Research Studio) facility consists of a space for multichannel electroacoustic composition, audio and video editing, design and creation of experimental interfaces, and the Audio Games Lab, which focuses on audio gaming in the context of research-creation. Originally a CFI-funded space, the facility has supported work by Smallwood as well as other faculty in the music department, including Mark Hannesson and Julia Byl, as well as several affiliated graduate students.

RELAB

Kim TallBear, Director

Based at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Native Studies, RELAB is comprised of faculty, students, and other creative workers who undertake research-creation, also known as art-based research, that is grounded in making “good relations.” That is, we combine research with performance and other creative works to help decolonize sexualities, environments, and other sets of relations. Three conceptual pillars, RE-STORY, RESEARCH, and RECLAIM, anchor our research-creation discourse and practices. One of our main projects is the Tipi Confessions cabaret show, which is an Indigenized spin-off of the popular Austin Bedpost Confessions show.

Media in Motion Lab (MML)

The Media in Motion Lab (MML) is led by Dr. Danielle Peers, and housed in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta. The MML strives to support the use of artistic, creative, digital and deeply collaborative methods for producing, analyzing, teaching or mobilizing socio-cultural knowledges about the moving body. Recent projects include: the research-creation dance-on-film, Inclinations; and Moving to Breathe an arts-based transdisicplinary collaboration on recreational dance and singing programs for people with neuromuscular respiratory conditions.

Femlab: A Feminist Exhibition Space

Femlab: a feminist exhibition space is a creative laboratory for feminist practice at the University of Alberta. Funded by the Department of Women's and Gender Studies, femlab features creative work that has been developed by U of A students in undergraduate courses in Women’s and Gender Studies, by MFA students and graduates, and by feminist artists across the university and our wider community. There are generally three shows a year and one artist talk.

Sound Studies Institute (SSI) Media Lab

The Sound Studies Institute is a research institute at the University of Alberta that promotes and celebrates research and artistic activities related to sound. The SSI Media Lab features a range of audio facilities including digitization (cassette, DAT, 1/4” reel-to-reel, 16mm film, and others), audio editing, voice recording, 5.1 audio previewing, and (soon) an 8-channel sound art gallery.
